Two Insurance Policies

Is it acceptable to have two insurance policies "active" for a car?

The assurance of origin for the car doesn't to run until October 1, but looking to start a policy of renewal on the same car about 7-8 days earlier. It is obvious because of this there are 2 active policies for about a week or two .. Is it legal or not? The reason why im asking this through is because the policy renewal will be significantly cheaper and im trying to add a driver named on this is much cheaper than if I had to add on current policy that ends next week
